How to Be a Heartbreaker - A Review of THE LONELY HEARTS CLUB by Elizabeth Eulberg

Love is all you need... or is it? Penny's about to find out in this wonderful debut.

Penny is sick of boys and sick of dating. So she vows: no more. It's a personal choice. . .and, of course, soon everyone wants to know about it. And a few other girls are inspired. A movement is born: The Lonely Hearts Club (named after the band from Sgt. Pepper). Penny is suddenly known for her nondating ways . . . which is too bad, because there's this certain boy she can't help but like. . . .

Elizabeth Eulberg was born and raised in Wisconsin before heading off to college at Syracuse University and making a career in the New York City book biz. Now a full-time writer, she is the author of The Lonely Hearts Club, Prom & Prejudice, Take a Bow, Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality, and Better Off Friends. She lives outside of Manhattan with her three guitars, two keyboards, and one drumstick.

Cute high school romance, but more importantly. A journey of self discovery.

Penny Lane had been used for the last time. Penny started the Lonely Hearts Club because her heart had been broken and she decided she would no longer date. The group began as a way to bond with others in their stand against man(boy)kind. As more girls joined the club, the girls find a support system unlike any other. Major decisions are made, and the Club raises a large sum of money for the girls athletics department. The Lonely Hearts Club grows to be about friendship and trust, while Penny Lane secretly struggles with both issues in her relationship with a boy from school. While this boy is an important part of the story, I greatly enjoyed reading about Penny Lane’s growth, as well as the maturing of many of the Club’s peripheral members.
I give it 4 out of 5 STARS.
